Healthcare Duress Systems: Coverage, Escalation and Acceptance Tests
A practical worksheet for operations, stores and project teams.
By addanode · Published 5 November 2026
Healthcare duress acceptance should follow a real request for assistance from the worn or installed device through identification, notification and the site’s response procedure. Test representative difficult positions, normal staffing arrangements and relevant failure conditions. Radio coverage, location interpretation, escalation and human attendance need separate evidence; an isolated successful button press cannot establish the entire operating chain.
Use the working record
Download the editable worksheet. Record the actual evidence and responsible reviewer against each relevant row. The empty results are inputs for your project, not completed tests. Add the equipment identity, operating period and reference method before assigning an outcome. Retain unsuccessful checks and the evidence from any repeat after correction.
Map the use case with the facility
Identify who carries or uses the device, where assistance may be requested and who is responsible for responding. Wards, corridors, service areas and external routes can have different access and staffing conditions. The facility's safety and care procedures determine the operational response; the system test should represent that procedure.
Record the device assignment and the information that a recipient needs. A fixed call point can identify a known place, while a wearable device may require an agreed location method. The display should communicate the actual granularity of that information, including a last observation or uncertain location where applicable.
Choose representative difficult positions
Survey the actual building with the local installer and facility team. Include relevant doors, structures, equipment and normal activity. Identify positions where the intended use may be more demanding, such as a device worn close to the body or used behind an obstruction. Keep those conditions in the test matrix.
A demonstration in an open corridor should not be treated as proof for every room. Record the final installed gateway or receiver position and the device configuration. If either changes, identify which coverage evidence needs to be repeated before the affected area is accepted.
Test the actual wearing and activation method
Use the intended device position and attachment during the agreed exercise. Clothing, orientation and the user's normal task can affect practical operation. The facility should assess whether the activation method is usable within its procedures and whether staff understand how a test differs from a live request.
Retain the device identity and assignment at the time of the exercise. A correctly received event linked to the wrong person or zone is still an acceptance problem. The test should verify the identity relationship as well as successful transmission.
Separate the event timestamps
Record activation, system receipt, notification, acknowledgement and attendance using the available time references. Identify which times are automatic and which are entered by a witness. Differences in clock quality can limit the precision of an elapsed-time comparison, so preserve the method used.
The facility sets its own approved response objectives and escalation procedure. This worksheet does not invent a universal acceptable attendance time. A useful exercise establishes whether the supplied system and actual roster produce the expected sequence and whether the resulting record can be reviewed.
| Test condition | Evidence to retain | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Normal wearing position | Device, user assignment and received event | Is the intended identity shown? |
| Difficult location | Position, obstruction and configuration | Is the agreed function delivered there? |
| Primary recipient unavailable | Escalation and alternate receipt | Does the operating roster work? |
| Relevant power interruption | Remaining functions and recovery | What dependencies are visible? |
| Lost communication | Missing-device or stale-state behaviour | Who investigates the gap? |
| Restoration | Configuration and current function check | Has the normal arrangement returned? |
Exercise escalation with the real roster
Test the primary and alternate contacts used for the relevant shift. Confirm what happens when the first recipient is unavailable or does not acknowledge. The record should distinguish a message being delivered from a person accepting responsibility for the next action.
Include shift handover and responsibility changes. A contact list that works during commissioning can become unsuitable when staff move roles. Assign the facility owner who maintains the roster and the evidence required after a change. Routine exercises should follow the site's approved process and be labelled clearly.
Test continuity at the supplied boundaries
Identify the power and communication dependencies of the field device, gateway, local display and remote notification route. Use approved methods to test relevant interruptions separately. The expected outcome should state which functions remain, which become unavailable and what the user sees.
Where backup power is supplied, retain its design basis and the agreed verification. A battery specification alone does not establish the autonomy of the installed arrangement. The responsible designer should account for the actual load and maintenance assumptions in the acceptance evidence.
Protect access to event and location records
The facility's responsible information owner should determine access, retention and permitted use for the actual records. A technician investigating a radio fault may not need the same information as the safety lead reviewing a response. Configure roles around their operational purpose and preserve administrative changes.
Use test identities or approved handling procedures during exercises where appropriate. Keep exported records in the agreed controlled location. The technical acceptance record should demonstrate that authorised reviewers can obtain the evidence they need without turning a broad user group into unrestricted observers of staff movements.
Close failures with correction and repeat evidence
Retain an unsuccessful test, the identified issue and the corrective action. Repeat the relevant condition after a change and record any effect on neighbouring areas or functions. A final summary should not hide failed locations simply because other tests succeeded.
The handover includes installed positions, device assignments, configuration, test results, open actions and the responsible local contacts. The facility then has a repeatable basis for checking replacements and changes. The exercise supports its formal response procedure; it is not a guarantee that every future incident will have the same outcome.
Connect the decision to the project
Use Nurse call and staff safety, Installing safety systems in old buildings south africa, Healthcare to place this task within the wider installation. Bring a recent operating record and identify the decision that the proposed measurement should support. A focused discussion should establish the first boundary, the responsible site participants and the evidence needed before expanding the scope.
Agree who maintains the point register and who can change interpretation rules. Preserve the previous version when a device, product, reporting period or responsibility changes. During handover, demonstrate an export that another authorised person can reconcile without relying on the dashboard operator to explain missing fields.
Discuss the scope with addanode using the actual site information, available interfaces and proposed acceptance record.
Sources and method
The OHSC norms and standards document supplies governance context. The proposed exercise matrix is a project method; it does not declare compliance, set a statutory response benchmark or replace the facility’s emergency procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Is signal strength enough to accept coverage?
Verify the required end-to-end event, identity and response workflow under the stated installed conditions.
Who chooses the response target?
The responsible facility team sets objectives through its actual safety and care procedures and agreements.
What should be repeated after a device or receiver moves?
Review the affected location, identity and communication evidence, then repeat the relevant acceptance conditions.
