Digital retrofit vs mechanical retrofit — which do you need?

"Machine retrofitting companies" can mean two different trades, and it's worth being clear which one you're shopping for:

Digital / monitoring retrofit — what we do

Add sensing, connectivity and OEE/condition monitoring to a machine that mechanically still does its job. The machine is untouched; the data layer is new. This is where addanode works, end to end — hardware, edge and platform, built in South Africa.

Mechanical / control rebuild — what we don't

Re-machining, new servo drives, CNC conversions or replacing the machine's control system. We don't do mechanical rebuilds — and if that's what your machine needs, monitoring data is still the cheapest way to prove it first, and to verify the rebuild afterwards.

Why plants start with the digital retrofit: 30 days of real OEE data usually shows whether the constraint is the machine itself — or the changeovers, micro-stops and waiting that no rebuild would fix. Many "old machine" problems turn out to be visibility problems.

Fit output and reject counters plus a current clamp on the main drive — that's enough to compute availability, performance and quality without any PLC contact. If the machine has no usable PLC at all, the sensors are the data source; if it has one, we can read existing tags over Modbus/OPC-UA as a bonus. Either way the control logic is never modified.
Almost anything that produces countable output or draws current: filling and packing lines, mills, presses, extruders, conveyors, compressors, mixers. Age is rarely the blocker — a 1990s machine with no electronics gets sensor-based metering; a 2010s machine gets its PLC tags read. The question we ask is what you want to know, not how old the machine is.

Sensor fitting happens during planned stops or changeovers, and nothing we install sits in the control path — so the line runs exactly as before, just visibly. The most common site feedback is that operators forget the hardware is there until the dashboard finds the first hidden loss.
