The price ladder, by capacity

Water purification pricing in South Africa is really four different markets that share one search box. Here's the ladder, from published supplier price lists surveyed in August 2026 (indicative — VAT and delivery treatment varies by supplier):

Two useful patterns in that table. First, capacity is cheap at the margin — stepping from 450 to 900 L/h costs far less than double, so buying one size up from your launch volume is usually rational. Second, independent suppliers' prices converge tightly at the popular sizes (two unrelated price lists put ~1,000+ L/h at R69,000–R70,000), which tells you the machine itself is close to a commodity. The differences that matter are support, spares availability and what's wrapped around the machine.

What the machine price doesn't include

A "water refill machine price" is not a "water shop price". Around the RO plant, a working shop still needs:

  • Pre-treatment sized to your feed water — sediment and carbon at minimum; more if you're on borehole supply;
  • Post-treatment — UV and/or ozone as the microbiological safety net;
  • Food-grade storage tanks and transfer pumps;
  • Dispensing points — the filling stations customers actually use;
  • Shopfitting and plumbing — washable surfaces and hygiene layout that pass the Certificate of Acceptability inspection;
  • Monitoring — because from day one, quality drift is a business risk, not a maintenance detail.

That's why full bottling setups are budgeted at several times the bare plant price, and why refill-first shops — which skip filling and labelling lines — can start much leaner: the ~R70,000 machine, plus tanks, dispensing and fitout, rather than the full R400,000 envelope.

The recurring costs that decide profitability

The purchase price is paid once. These are paid forever, and they're where water businesses quietly win or lose:

  • Membranes and filter cartridges — the single biggest controllable cost. Change on a calendar and you either waste cartridge life or ride a fouled membrane into quality failure; change on measured performance and both losses shrink. How to compare quotes without getting burned

  • Normalise to litres per hour, delivered and installed — "1,000 LPH" on a promo price excluding delivery, tanks and commissioning is not comparable to a turnkey quote that includes them.
  • Ask what the membrane replacement costs and how often — a cheap plant with expensive, scarce membranes is not cheap.
  • Ask about spares lead time — a shop that can't dispense doesn't earn; days waiting for a part are the real price of the discount.
  • Check what quality instrumentation is included — many plants ship with, at best, a panel TDS readout. Continuous monitoring is usually an add-on; budget it deliberately rather than discovering the gap at your first inspection.
